Girmit


"Girmit" is a popular street food from the state of Karnataka in India. It is a spicy and tangy snack made with puffed rice (murmura) and a variety of flavorful ingredients. Here's a simple recipe for Girmit:

Ingredients:
  • 4 cups puffed rice (murmura)
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium-sized tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 green chilli, finely chopped (adjust according to your spice preference)
  • 2 tablespoons peanuts
  • 2 tablespoons roasted gram dal (putani)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chaat masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions:
  1. Heat oil in a pan or kadai over medium heat.
  2. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Allow them to splutter.
  3. Add peanuts and roasted gram dal. Stir and roast until they turn golden brown.
  4. Add chopped onions and green chilli. Sauté until the onions become translucent.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, and salt. Mix well and cook until the tomatoes become soft and mushy.
  6. Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool for a few minutes.
  7. In a large mixing bowl, take the puffed rice (murmura). Pour the cooled onion-tomato mixture over the puffed rice.
  8. Add chaat masala and chopped coriander leaves. Mix everything together gently, ensuring that the puffed rice is coated evenly with the spices.
  9. Serve the Girmit immediately in bowls or plates. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice on top for extra tanginess.
  10. Girmit is typically enjoyed as a snack, and it pairs well with a cup of hot tea or coffee.
