Chapati

Chapati, also known as roti, is a popular unleavened Indian flatbread made from whole wheat flour. It is a staple in many Indian households and is commonly consumed with various curries, vegetables, or lentils.

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water (approximately)
  • 1-2 tablespoons oil or ghee (for cooking)

Instructions:
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt.
  2. Gradually add water to the flour mixture while kneading with your hands. Continue adding water until the dough comes together and is soft but not sticky. Adjust the water quantity as needed.
  3. Once the dough is formed, drizzle a little oil on top and knead it for a few more minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest for about 15-20 minutes.
  5. After resting, divide the dough into small equal-sized portions. Roll each portion into a smooth ball.
  6. Take one dough ball and flatten it slightly with your palm. Dip it into dry flour to prevent sticking.
  7. Roll the dough ball into a thin, round circle using a rolling pin. You can dust the surface and the rolling pin with dry flour as needed.
  8. Heat a tawa (flat griddle) or a non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
  9. Place the rolled chapati onto the hot tawa and let it cook for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until small bubbles start to appear on the surface.
  10. Flip the chapati and cook the other side for another 30 seconds to 1 minute. You may notice it puffing up, which is a good sign.
  11. Once both sides are cooked, remove the chapati from the tawa and place it on a plate.
  12. Optionally, you can brush the chapati with a little oil or ghee for added flavour and softness.
  13. Repeat the process with the remaining dough portions until all the chapatis are cooked.
